  • In 1997, American Bird Conservancy launched the Cats Indoors Campaign for Safer Birds and Cats to educate cat owners, policy makers, and the general public that cats, wildlife, and people all benefit when cats are kept indoors, confined to an enclosure when outdoors, or trained to go outside on a harness and leash.

  • ABC has long been an outspoken advocate for cats, birds, and people and opposes the failed program known as Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR), also known as Trap, Neuter, Re-Abandon. In December 2009 a superior court judge ruled in favor of a coalition of conservation groups, including ABC, to halt implementation of a program formalizing the controversial practice TNR of feral cats in the City of Los Angeles, pending environmental review.

  • In early 2013 American Bird Conservancy and partners successfully defended cats, birds, and people against a proposed statewide law that would have exempted TNR programs from Florida’s anti-abandonment requirements. TNR releases cats into the environment where they are left to fend for themselves in harsh and traumatic environments, a practice that is both illegal and inhumane.
