Colombia
Fundación ProAves has six bird reserves
with lodges to accommodate tour groups, volunteers and visitors.
Jenaim Ecolodge and Blue Moon Restaurant,
El Dorado Bird Reserve, in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta,
northern Colombia. This is a paradise for birds. There are
almost 20 species endemic to the Santa Marta Mountains, such
as the Santa Marta Parakeet , Santa Marta Sabrewing (a hummingbird),
and Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant. In addition, the mountains are
important wintering areas for migrants from North America,
such as the Golden-winged and Cerulean warblers. The birds
here are only part of the main attraction. The lodge has 16
beds in six rooms with private bathrooms , each with spectacular
views down to the Caribbean Sea far below.
El Paujil Bird Reserve is best place to
see the Critically Endangered Blue-billed Curassow and many
other endemic Magdalena lowland species . Just six hours from
Bogota, the reserve accommodations are located beside the
Río Ermitaño and have seven rooms and 18 beds,
including four rooms with private bathrooms and two with air
conditioning.
The Cerulean Warbler Bird Reserve protects
a significant 221 hectare (545 acre) relict of Colombian Oak
forest with an extraordinary concentration of threatened bird
species , including the Critically Endangered Gorgeted Wood-Quail
and Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird. The reserve boasts an impressive
150 year old stone path called “Camino de Lengerke”
which was a vital trading route between the Magdalena River
and the interior. The meter-wide trail gently winds up the
Yariguíes Mountains from the subtropical coffee plantations
into the oak forest reserve. The reserve has four rooms with
private bathrooms for 11 people and a further three rooms
with shared facilities.
The Arrierito Antiqueño Bird Reserve
protects a core forest remnant of 526 hectares (1,300 acres)
to protect the Chestnut-capped Piha and many other key species.
The reserve has a colonial farmhouse and four new spacious
rooms with private bathrooms for 8 people .
El Mirador Bird Reserve. After being lost
for over 90 years, ProAves rediscovered the Fuertes’s
Parrot in 2002 and protected its montane cloud forest in the
Central Andes. Besides the parrot, this reserve also holds
more than ten threatened and endemic bird species , such as
the Golden-plumed Parakeet, Brown-banded Antpitta, and Crescent-faced
Antpitta. A rustic but updated farmhouse on the reserve farmhouse
will accept groups of up to ten visitors.
Colibrí del Sol Bird Reserve protects
the highest massif in the 500 km (300 mile) long Western Cordillera
between 2,750 and 3,800 meters (9,000 to 12,000 feet) where
reside the unique Dusky Starfrontlet and Chestnut-bellied
Flowerpiercer, along with many other species . The reserve
has rustic lodging for visitors in a cabin with basic accommodations
for up to eight persons.
