ABC Partner: ECOAN
The Asociación
de Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN, the Andean Ecosystem Association)
works to conserve birds and other wildlife and their ecosystems
in the Andes of Peru. ECOAN works with communities to protect
dwindling high-altitude forests. The Association has projects
in environmental education, ecotourism, as well as conservation
biological research.
Partnership Activities:
Among the projects on which American Bird Conservancy has
worked with partner ECOAN are restoration of Polylepis woodlands,
a unique high-altitude forest important for mountain birds;
protection of lands for endangered species such as the Marvelous
Spatuletail (a hummingbird), Junín Grebe, and Royal
Cinclodes; conservation of Abra Patricia Reserve, a site for
the Long-whiskered Owlet and many other rare and endangered
Andean birds; and protecting Neotropical migrants in the Andes
by building a strategic protected area network.
