ABC's Network Partners

Asociación Armonía is a non-profit organization (NGO) dedicated to bird conservation in Bolivia. Armonia’s conservation actions are based on scientific studies and the active involvement of local communities, respecting their culture and knowledge. Asociación Armonía is the Bolivian partner of American Bird Conservancy, BirdLife International and World Land Trust-US, three organizations committed to biodiversity conservation.

The principal mission of Fundação Biodiversitas is the conservation of the biodiversity of Brazil, by obtaining and applying scientific information to biodiversity conservation. Its projects take into account the interaction of humans and the environment, seeking means to reconcile the conservation of nature and socio-economic development.

Partnership Activities:
American Bird Conservancy is working with Fundação Biodiversitas to acquire lands for the protection of the Critically Endangered Stresemann’s Bristlefront (and 19 other endangered birds and mammals) in northeastern Minas Gerais state. In Bahia state, ABC and Biodiversitas are working together to save Lear’s Macaw through land acquisition, food tree (licuri palm) protection, and ecotourism projects.

The Asociación de Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN, the Andean Ecosystem Association) works to conserve birds and other wildlife and their ecosystems in the Andes of Peru. ECOAN works with communities to protect dwindling high-altitude forests. The Association has projects in environmental education, ecotourism, as well as conservation biological research.

Partnership Activities:
Among the projects on which American Bird Conservancy has worked with partner ECOAN are restoration of Polylepis woodlands, a unique high-altitude forest important for mountain birds; protection of lands for endangered species such as the Marvelous Spatuletail (a hummingbird), Junín Grebe, and Royal Cinclodes; conservation of Abra Patricia Reserve, a site for the Long-whiskered Owlet and many other rare and endangered Andean birds; and protecting Neotropical migrants in the Andes by building a strategic protected area network.

Fundación Jocotoco is an Ecuadorian organization established to protect land of critical importance to the conservation of Ecuador’s endangered birds and associated biodiversity. Fundación Jocotoco has established eight reserves protecting about 8,000 ha. The Fundación’s reserves are home to about 800 species of birds, of which about 40 are globally endangered species.

Partnership Activities:
Fundación Jocotoco and ABC have collaborated on several projects involving protection of lands for such important endangered species as the Great Green Macaw, El Oro Parakeet, Jocotoco Antpitta, and Pale-headed Brush-Finch. In addition we have worked to build a strategic protected area network, and for protecting Neotropical migrants in the Andes.

Fundación ProAves is the leading organization in protection of birds and their habitats in Colombia. ProAves works to prevent the extinction of birds through protection of key habitats, working with institutions, communities, and governments. The organization promotes activities that work toward the conservation of natural ecosystems.

Partnership Activities:
American Bird Conservancy is working with ProAves on a wide variety of projects from protection of lands for endangered resident species such as Blue-billed Curassow, Fuertes’s Parrot, and Dusky Starfrontlet, but also for Neotropical migrant species such as the Cerulean Warbler. ABC and ProAves are also collaborating on establishing shade coffee conservation easements for the Cerulean Warbler, and implementing bird-friendly silvipasture practices (including native trees and shrubs among grazing lands) for migratory and resident birds.
