Conservation of the Black-breasted Puffleg at the Yanacocha Reserve, Ecuador

Region:

Ecuador

Partner:

Fundación Jocotoco

Initiation:

2002
Introduction: The Yanacocha Reserve protects the core population of the Critically Endangered and endemic Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis), a hummingbird and an Alliance for Zero Extinction species found on the northwest flank of Volcán Pichincha, just an hour outside of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. The reserve protects 964 hectares (2,382 acres) of “ceja de montaña” or upper montane cloud forest on the slopes of the volcano, while in other areas much of the forest at this altitude has been removed for charcoal production and for pasture for livestock grazing.

Objective: To expand and ensure sustainability of the Yanacocha Reserve for the protection of the Black-breasted Puffleg.

Accomplishments:
1. The Mayor and Council of the City of Quito announced that the Black-breasted Puffleg has been adopted as the Emblem of Quito on June 23rd 2006.
2. Effective protection of 964 hectares (2,382 acres).
3. Begun reforestation efforts (May 2008).
