Creation of the Mirabilis-Swarovski Bird Reserve to protect the Colorful Puffleg, Colombia

Region:

Municipality of El Tambo, adjacent to Munchique National Park, Department of Cauca, Colombia

Partner:

Fundación ProAves

Initiation:

January 2006
Introduction: The Mirabilis-Swarovski Bird Reserve consists of 1,806 hectares (4,462 acres) of Andean cloud forest between the elevations of 1,500 and 2,700 meters (4,900 to 8,800 feet) adjoining Munchique National Natural Park. Because of the presence of the Critically Endangered Colorful Puffleg (Eriocnemis mirabilis) it is recognized as an Alliance for Zero Extinction site, but is also home to a number of other species, including the Critically Endangered Munchique Wood-Wren (Henicorhina negreti) and Endangered species such as the Chestnut-bellied Flower-piercer (Diglossa gloriosissima).

The Reserve helps protect the southern boundary of the Munchique National Natural Park and protects a core area of subtropical and montane forests from deforestation for agriculture and pasturelands.

1. Understand the population status, habitat requirements, and general ecology of the Colorful Puffleg and Munchique Wood-Wren.
2. Protect habitat identified for the Colorful Puffleg and Munchique Wood-Wren.
3. Establish ecotourism facilities to assist with reserve sustainability.

Accomplishments:
1. Habitat and requirements of the puffleg have been identified .
2. A total of 1,806 hectares (4,462 acres) of Andean cloud forest have been acquired and protected
3. Reserve guard and director hired to protect the reserve.
