Introduction: The
Critically Endangered Blue-throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis)
has an estimated population of fewer than 300 individuals and
only occurs in a small area of Bolivia, qualifying the area
as an Alliance for Zero Extinction
site. This area is also home to the Endangered White-winged
Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans) and Vulnerable birds
such as the Cock-tailed Tyrant (Alectrurus tricolor),
Sharp-tailed Tyrant (Culicivora caudacuta), and Black-masked
Finch (Coryphaspiza melanotis).
The macaw faces threats from the illegal
trafficking for the pet trade, and all of the birds and other
fauna and flora in the area are threatened by destruction
of habitat from the intensification of cattle farming. To
date, the Blue-throated Macaw is completely unprotected.
Objective:
To protect the core habitat of the Blue-throated Macaw.
Actions:
1. Investigate best sites for a feasible private reserve.
2. Develop a conservation plan for private reserve.
3. Purchase and protect the properties containing habitat
and key populations of the Blue-throated Macaw.
4. Implement management techniques that benefit the macaw
(e.g. artificial nest-boxes, increase suitable habitat, assist
palm regeneration, lower density of cattle grazing, restrict
grassland burning, etc.)
5. Develop ecotourism operation to assist with sustainably
supporting protections costs.
