Development of the Cerulean Warbler Wintering
Conservation Plan

Introduction: The
Cerulean
Warbler (Dendroica cerulea) is a WatchList
species, and is considered Vulnerable because it has undergone
a very rapid population decline at least partially because of
habitat loss and fragmentation on its breeding grounds.
On its wintering grounds in the northern
Andean countries, the warbler faces serious threats as
well. These include loss of habitat due to deforestation for
agriculture and cattle pasturing and other types of development,
as well as conversion of traditional shade coffee plantations
to sun coffee plantations.
Because the winter range of the warbler
includes several countries (and the countries it passes through
between its breeding and wintering grounds is even larger),
planning for the conservation of the Cerulean Warbler is a
large task involving partners and governments from various
countries.
Objective:
To develop a conservation plan for the Cerulean Warbler on
its wintering grounds.

Actions:
1. Learn more about distribution, survivorship, and habitat
quality of the Cerulean Warbler.
2. Identify key wintering habitat sites for Cerulean Warbler
across the Andes.
3. Develop a plan to promote shade grown coffee to benefit
the Cerulean Warbler.
4. Support the Cerulean Warbler Technical Working Group's
efforts to develop protocols for sampling winter populations.
5. Develop and improve the Cerulean Warbler reserve plan.
6. Identify new potential properties for acquisition.
5. Raise funds to support Cerulean Warbler protection strategies.
Accomplishments:
1. January 2008--ABC received a grant from The Nature Conservancy
to fund ProAves to conduct surveys for the Cerulean Warbler
between January and March, 2008.
2. April 2007--ProAves is producing a detailed map of the
reserve.
3. February 2008—Set up an international workshop in
McAllen, Texas, to discuss an early draft of the Conservation
Plan.
4. October 2008—Workshop on “Conservation Planning
for Migratory and Resident Birds of the Northern Andes”
(3rd Cerulean Warbler Summit) was held in Bogota and at the
Cerulean Warbler Reserve at San
Vicente de Chucurí, Colombia, with 90 conservationists,
biologists, and representatives of industries (coffee and
cacao production, energy).
5. January 2009—Near-final draft of the Cerulean Warbler
Wintering Ground Conservation Plan was produced.
Help the Cerulean Warbler and other Neotropical
migrants and residents by supporting shade-grown
coffee.
