The Central Hardwoods Joint Venture

The Central Hardwoods Joint Venture (CHJV) is a partnership of state and federal government agencies and non-governmental organizations who work together to ensure the long-term viability of native bird populations. American Bird Conservancy was a founding member of the CHJV, employs its Coordinator and administers its finances.

The partnership's conservation efforts are focused on the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region (CHBCR). This includes the Ozark Highlands, Boston Mountains, and Interior Lowland Plateaus. The area comprises 75 million acres of rolling hills covered primarily with hardwood forests interspersed with glades and woodlands and crisscrossed by deep river valleys.

Many of the bird species that inhabit this area migrate between Mexico, the Central Hardwoods, and Canada. To protect native bird species throughout their ranges, the CHJV will also work on conservation projects with partners in Mexico and Canada in areas that these birds use for breeding or over-wintering.

The CHJV office coordinates, assists, and works with partners and others concerned with the conservation of native bird populations and habitats in the Central Hardwoods Region.
